Distraction Osteogenesis is a slow separation of two bony segments. The new bones are allowed to fill in the gap that was created by the separating bony segments. This is a fairly new method for treating selected deformities and defects of the oral and facial skeleton.
Distraction Osteogenesis was initially used to treat defects of the oral and facial region in 1990. Through the years, technological and surgical advances have provided the oral and maxillofacial surgeons with a safe and predictable way to treat selected deformities.
