Are you suffering from disrupted sleep and / or low blood oxygen levels? Did you know this occurs when your tongue is sucked against the back of your throat, stopping your ability to breathe?
When the oxygen level in your brain decreases, you partially awaken. The obstruction in your throat will clear, and your air flow starts again. This usually causes a loud gasp.
Dr. Karlis will assess the anatomic relationships in your maxillofacial region. An x-ray of your skull will reveal the level of obstruction. In some cases, a naso-pharyngeal exam is performed with a flexible fiber-optic camera to confirm to amount of decreased oxygenation levels.
A sleep study is often recommended to monitor you overnight.
